About the Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education
The Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education is a public advocate for an open-admission, rigorous, hands-on educational
model, paired with the belief that any student can succeed when provided with a safe and supportive environment. In the 2008-2009 academic year, donors generously supported the Foundation, contributing more than $1 million in gifts and pledges. Thanks to the innovative programs and impressive results of our two schools, our grant success rate is nearly 70%. Of funds raised, more than 80% goes directly to the two schools. The Foundation seeks to provide the schools with the resources to educate students effectively and well. Nationally, charter schools raise about $1,500 per student to supplement public funds; our goal is to raise our level of support to meet or exceed the national average. Public funds are not enough to educate students to the high standard they deserve. Louisiana spends significantly less than the national per-pupil average. In a state that ranks near the bottom of most public education ratings, instead of spending less on our students, we should be spending more.
